NBC’s ‘Community’ season 5: Donald Glover developing music comedy at FX

Donald Glover may be done with “Community” after a five-episode stint coming up this season, but that does not mean that he is done with TV. The actor, who remains best known (save for his rapping as Childish Gambino) for his role as Troy Barnes on the NBC hit, is now going to be appearing on a new comedy airing on what is ultimately the land of the edgy programing in FX.

The tentative title for Glover’s series is going to be “Atlanta,” and the focus is on the city’s thriving music scene. He will both star and executive produced the series if picked up, where it could be a part of a block that also features a new comedy starring Tracy Morgan. (Fun fact: Glover has played a young Tracy Morgan on “30 Rock,” which is also where he first got his start as a writer.)

We’re sure (mostly because we have already seen comments about it online) that some people are going to accuse Glover of hanging “Community” out to dry here to go work on his own show, but the truth here is that the writing has been on the wall for some time that he was interested in his own ventures after giving four good years to the show. He tried to develop a comedy for NBC last year based on his own life, but it ended up not reaching the pilot stage of production.

NBC has to be kicking themselves over potentially losing Glover, given all of his creative achievements already in his career. He’s done stand-up, music, and contributed to a pair of Emmy-nominated shows, and done all of this before the age of 30. In some ways, he and Lena Dunham (who were ironically love interests briefly on “Girls”) are the freshest faces in comedy.
