‘Doctor Who’ season 8: Matt Smith talks Christmas, anniversary special, more

Doctor Who

With the “Doctor Who” 50th anniversary special approaching on November 23, you may as well crown Matt Smith the unofficial king of Comic-Con this weekend. The man is going to be anywhere and everywhere promoting the event, whether it be via a live edition of the Nerdist Podcast or even the “Doctor Who” Comic-Con panel this weekend. The major thing to remember is that this is a man that is going to have his hands full, in particular when it comes to doing various interviews about the show that has helped turn him into a sensation.

As for what Smith has to say about the role in general, the actor did his best to explain in a video interview with IGN, which you can see below:

“It’s completely transformed my life, and my family’s life. It’s been a wonderful experience … In terms of what I’ve meant to the show, I don’t know, really.”

Smith also talks about the “darker” side of Steven Moffat’s writing, and how he recently met with him about the first twenty or so pages that have been written for the Christmas special, which is going to premiere later this year and mark the beginning of the end for his time as the Doctor. We will likely hear an announcement as to the next man to play this role very soon, but the BBC is still keeping their list of candidates (understandably) very close to the vest.

Overall, this is one of the more pleasant Smith interviews we’ve seen. It always helps to have someone who completely knows their stuff, and seems excited to talk with the actor without going into complete superfan mode.
