2013 Emmy surprises: Emilia Clarke, Jeff Daniels, Kerry Washington, and Mayim Bialik
Now that we’ve given ourselves a few moments to complain relentlessly about some of the ways that the Primetime Emmy Awards got it wrong this year, why not take a minute to change things up and focus on what they got right? There were some surprises on the show that we were actually rather thrilled to see, including some love for people who we once considered to be long shots to walk away with any sort of love.
Emilia Clarke – We were honestly surprised that anyone other than Peter Dinklage received love from the Emmys, given that he was in their mind the only person that they knew existed. We were then more surprised that it was her and not Michelle Fairley who ended up receiving a nod.
Jeff Daniels – Considering how many people watch “The Newsroom” just to mock it, we didn’t quite think that the fans would actually come and support this show at all.
Kerry Washington – Even if this did happen while Tatiana Maslany was snubbed, it was nice to see the “Scandal” star get appreciation for a role that has drawn a ton of public support.
Mayim Bialik – Yes, a “Big Bang Theory” actress was deemed worthy of some love, and it seems appropriate under these circumstances that it would be her, given her chemistry with Jim Parsons.
All of the Netflix love – We knew that “House of Cards” would receive a few nods, but not in so many categories. Even “Arrested Development” stole a nod in Best Actor.
Jim Carter – When you look at what Brendan Coyle did on the British import this season, we were just surprised to see anyone other than him nominated.
