House of the Dragon season 3 episode 6: Alicent’s mission

There are a number of people heading out of House of the Dragon season 3 episode 6 in a rather challenging spot. Is Alicent facing the worst situation of all of them?
Well, we tend to think the answer is yes among those who are still alive. Criston Cole met his demise early on in the hour; meanwhile, the woman he loved in Alicent found herself in a terrible position close to the end. She and Helaena were found out making their mistake, which also did lead to the eventual reveal of the latter’s pregnancy. Alicent is trying to do whatever she can to barter for their safety, even if that means tracking down another one of her children in Aemond. This is a part of the deal she was forced to take from Rhaenyra at the end of this episode.

Is there a chance that Alicent dies somewhere along the way? Sure, but the same could be said for Helaena. Rhaenyra promised to look after her but at the same time, we saw her struggling mentally within her King’s Landing prison. She could not move around as much as she once could because of her previous escape attempt. Rhaenyra still wants to consider herself kinder that some rulers could be, but that did not make her immune to hard choices.
The concluding moment between Rhaenyra and Alicent near the end of the story was a harsh reminder of that. Emma D’Arcy’s character has clearly wanted to look towards her father Viserys for inspiration when it comes to the sort of leader she can be. However, the problem there is that Viserys operated from a time of peace; she has to navigate some incredibly different waters.
