House of the Dragon season 3 episode 3: Emma D’Arcy looks ahead
As we look ahead now to House of the Dragon season 3 episode 3 over on HBO, one thing does absolutely feel clear: Changes are ahead. How can they not, given what we have seen so far?
At the end of episode 2, we saw what was clearly one of the most seismic changes that we’ve seen over the course of the series with Rhaenyra actually taking over King’s Landing and sitting atop the Iron Throne. All of a sudden, she is in a position of far greater power, but we would hardly consider it stable at this point. How can you say that knowing full well that there are likely other twists and turns coming? Also, there is the pressure that simply comes with her trying to fulfill the very thing that the character has wanted much of her life.

In speaking about all of this a little bit further per Entertainment Weekly, here is some of what Emma D’Arcy had to say:
“There is a growing belief that hers is a holy war, that she has a divine mandate to rule, and that any action she takes in pursuit of that aim has godly backing … I suppose I see that as still requiring an external validation in order to claim one’s name, to claim what one’s owed… It’s what becomes frightening, right? It disables more nuanced conversation. I do think that increasingly extreme position is one of the tinderboxes that now sits in season 3.”
Ultimately, the fear that Rhaenyra has is what makes the remainder of the season so exciting — while Alicent seems to want peace and designed this plan with that in mind, there may not be everyone else in her family in agreement. This is, after all, a move that she made independently of a number of people while sending Aemond off to Harrenhal.
