‘New Girl’ season 3 spoilers: Damon Wayans Jr. brings Coach back for substantial arc
Could this be the greatest “New Girl” announcement that Fox could have ever presented to us? We’re starting to feel like the answer to this very question is a pretty boisterous “yes.”
According to TVLine, Damon Wayans Jr. is going to officially cross back over to the Fox series in his original role as Coach, which he played back in the show’s pilot. If you recall, Coach was the loud, overly-intense roommate of Nick and Schmidt’s when Jess first moved into the loft, but was replaced promptly with Winston (Lamorne Morris) at the start of the show’s second episode. the reason behind the switch was pretty simple in that Wayans originally filmed the pilot in second position to “Happy Endings,” likely thinking that the ABC comedy would not end up being picked up for more episodes. When it was, it therefore had to be some sort of major shock to his system, and he returned to “Happy Endings.”
The announcement that show is not going to continue allows for the opportunity for Wayans to return to “New Girl,” and this is probably the only good thing that has come from what has been an otherwise sad story. All we know for now is that Coach will have a significant arc during the third season, but it is unclear if he is going to actually become a series regular as he was originally intended to be on the show. After all, the balance of the five people they have (with occasional guest stars) does typically turn out to work rather well.
