Dutton Ranch season 1 episode 4: Beth, Rip, and even more loss
We had a feeling entering Dutton Ranch season 1 episode 4 that there was a chance that something terrible could happen. After all, one foot-and-mouth disease diagnosis can lead to widespread problems, and we saw it within this hour courtesy of Beth and Rip’s herd.
First, the two had the fire in Montana; then, they found themselves down in Texas having to start again. They had trouble finding a slaughterhouse and right when they started to formulate a new plan, this happens. The herd is lost in what was an incredibly emotional episode and now, they find themselves even further back at square one.

Speaking to The Wrap, Cole Hauser discusses just how hard it was for Rip to cull the herd, also knowing there was nothing that his character could do:
“I was thinking about the little calf that we brought to from Montana. And there’s a great moment where Beth looks at Rip and goes, ‘Can we save it?’ And I just shake my head. That, in a way, is, is a child of ours — it’s a memory of the past of Montana … I mean, obviously, it was a very emotional day and it’s a sad moment, but one that just continues to tear them down to this place of having to find a way out. It’s the loss of not only their home in Montana, but now the loss of their herd, and how are they going to get through this? It was another huge punch to the to the guts for them both.”
If there is any hope at all for Rip and Beth, it is the rather obvious fact that the two are as resilient as they come. Think back to even their struggles over on Yellowstone, and remember from there how they have always bounced back. Even when it has been difficult, they have found a way — and it is hard to imagine anything different happening now.
