Outlander series finale: EP on Jamie’s ghost, shocking ending

It definitely makes sense to come out of the Outlander series finale asking all sorts of questions, with one of the biggest being the fate of Jamie Fraser. What truly happened there? We saw his death, but also things circling back to the ghost that has long been a part of the show’s lore.

Then, you had the ending with Claire opening her eyes at the same time as Jamie — and with her sporting white hair. Did she bring him back? Is this the two of them entering the afterlife? These are at least some of what we are left to wonder at present.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts did not fully give us answers, but explained how he knew parts of the ending for quite some time:

I always knew I wanted to incorporate [Jamie’s] ghost. It was really important that the moment have some kind of closure. And the other thing that I’ve said for anybody who would ask in meetings about the reality and authenticity and history and all these things — there’s magic in Outlander. I have to remind people, she came through time. And the question has always been why? This is my interpretation — and everybody should have their own — that this is never ending and never beginning. In a weird way, it just keeps moving. A true love story, to me, is born in the stars, like they say. We laced these things in. They’re there. Jamie says in an episode, “That’s us. We’re up there in the stars and will never end.” In the dialogue, if you’ve been paying attention all along, this story’s already been told. I’m just showing it at the end.

This ending is going to be polarizing — we do not know how else to say it. We do appreciate the lean in to mysticism, just as the cameo from Diana Gabaldon in the post-credit sequence was really fun. This was far from a perfect final season and yet, we are seeing another crystal-clear reminder of how difficult it can truly be to land the plane on a series like this.
