Law & Order: SVU season 28 premiere date hopes at NBC

Following the big finale tonight at NBC, is there anything more we can say regarding Law & Order: SVU season 28? Obviously, the Mariska Hargitay crime drama is as much of an institution as you are ever going to find. However, we never want to take it for granted that it will be around forever.

For the time being, the good news is simply that we at least have one more season on the way. That has thankfully been confirmed and by virtue of that, you do not have to worry about the immediate future. We do tend to think that the show goes as long as Hargitay wants to stick around and for the time being, our hope is to see it arrive at season 30. It already is the longest-running primetime drama series in history, so that honor is officially secured.

Now, let’s get back to the subject of possible premiere dates. When could SVU be back? As great as it would be to see it before September, that’s just not realistic. We have a long history of this and every other primetime drama returning to network TV in either late September or early October; that is not likely to change here. The plan is for season 28 to air on Thursday nights at 9:00 p.m. Eastern once more, and our feeling here is that we are going to get an exact launch date over the course of the summer.

In terms of the exact stories ahead, there is at least no real reason to think we’re going to see something all that different from what we’ve had in the past. This show is about finding justice for victims and bringing critical issues to life; that is something that should never change, and it should remain front and center.
