NCIS: Origins season 3 spoilers: What is Gibbs, Lala’s future now?

Following the events of last night’s NCIS: Origins season 2 finale, it definitely feels like there are major changes ahead for Gibbs and Lala. How can there not be after that kiss?
As we move forward now, it feels like there’s a chance for the two to be in some sort of relationship — however, it is one with a clear expiration date. How it ends remains a mystery, but there is still something so painful at the forefront that Mark Harmon’s version of the character never wants to discuss. We do need that clarity, but there is not a real timetable on it as of yet. All we know is that there are only ten episodes moving into the next season, suggesting that we have a limited amount of time moving forward.

So why make this particular choice right now to bring the characters together? Speaking to TVLine, here is some of what executive producer David J. North had to say:
It felt honest. We knew we wanted to tell this love story between those two. Historically on “NCIS,” it’d be like 15 seasons, and then one of the characters would leave, and then you’d find out that maybe they hooked up off camera when the character returns three years later. We wanted to take chances and walk these paths — and that’s what we’re doing.
Ultimately, the biggest thing we actually hope for here is that Origins does actually manage to figure out how to continue to defy these trends — meaning that they actually give these characters a little bit of time to be happy. Remember, there can still be conflict from other places on the show! Not everything has to move in a straight line.
