The Testaments season 1 episode 7: The Becka, Garth surprise

We knew heading into The Testaments season 1 episode 7 we would be hearing more about potential matches. Also, that all of them would be difficult and, at times, downright terrible.

The obvious bad news at this point is that Agnes is being forced into a possible marriage to Commander Weston, a high-powered man in Gilead but also someone with a terrible past. Despite her attempts to sabotage the union, nothing goes according to plan — not only does she make Paula furious bringing up the Commander’s late wife, but Weston still seems eager to marry her. All of this is made all the more shattering by the brief amount of hope Agnes had that she could be married to Garth.

So is a suitor to Garth instead? As it turns out, Becka, who only has one other notable suitor in Commander Maddox. This makes things all the more emotionally complicated. Agnes does not want Becka to marry her crush and yet, the only alternatives are a man who got her drunk at the ball or presumably some people out in the Colonies. Garth may be the best match for her, given that 1) she actually does not want to be married at all and 2) Garth is undercover with Mayday. Granted, nobody other than Daisy knows this, but it is a sign that he won’t hurt her if the two end up together.

These prospective pairings could end up impacting the rest of the season, and there is one other question to wonder, as well — how much does Lydia know? If she is aware of Garth’s true identity, then she may have deliberately promoted him as a means of allowing him to collect more intel, while also potentially saving Becka from a terrible fate. (The problem is that Becka’s father is as awful as they come, and we do not trust him to make a nice decision for his daughter.)
