The Testaments season 1 episode 6: The big Aunt Vidala reveal

We absolutely did enter The Testaments season 1 episode 6 with an expectation that we are going to learn so much more about Aunt Lydia. With that being said who anticipated we would ever find out about Aunt Vidala at the same time?

Obviously, it makes sense that the two have some history if Lydia was going to trust her with something at her school. However, it turns out that the two had a history back at the pre-Gilead school they worked at together, when Vidala went by the name Vivian. They’ve got through a lot sense then, including something absolutely horrific.

Just like almost everyone in this universe, we certainly ensured that the relationship between the characters was going to be complicated. Yet, the writers took this to yet another level when it was revealed that Lydia was ready to kill Vivian for the sake of her own self-preservation. The only reason Vivian is alive to be Vidala is because Judd did not load the gun given to her. This has to be rolling around in Vidala’s head, even still.

If you think back to episode 5, then you know that Judd is already conspiring to potentially replace Lydia with Vidala down the road — her time could be running out. With that in mind, Vidala may start to think about just how loyal she is willing to be to someone who was willing to leave her for dead. This may play out over the rest of the season — even though Vidala may be able to forgive enough to work with Ann Dowd’s character week in and week out, does that mean she will forget? Hardly, and that could define a big part of the story to come.
