The Boys season 5 episode 3 spoilers: More on Annie, Hughie’s future

As we look more towards The Boys season 5 episode 3 on Prime Video next week, are there some reasons for hope? Obviously, we want some people to survive the upcoming bloodbath, but we’d also like for them to be in a somewhat-reasonable emotional state.

Now that we’ve lined all of that up, let’s just take a moment to have a larger chat on Hughie and Annie. The two clearly love each other, but they’ve also got different philosophies for how to deal with the impending Supe battle. Jack Quaid’s character has been locked up and imprisoned. Meanwhile, Annie has been out there fighting and within that, she’s been forced to confront mortality in a real way — and that may be an even harder thing for a Supe to do.

So where do these two characters stand heading into episode 3? In a new interview with Deadline, showrunner Eric Kripke does his part to lay that out:

I think Annie’s had a really hard year, and she’s running pretty low on hope. And even if she’s gonna keep trying to win the war and definitely go down swinging if she has to, she does not foresee a happy ending for herself. Whereas I think Hughie wants to have a future and a happy ending with Annie. So, I think Annie, thinking that there’s really no way out of this alive, I think forces her to be more cynical, and to be a little less moral, and in effect, that puts her more in Butcher’s camp. And as it moves forward, a lot of the season sort of becomes Hughie and Butcher as these two poles on either side of The Boys, and is Butcher gonna drag everyone into the shadows, or can Hughie drag them into the light? And Annie is definitely, as the season begins, much more on Butcher’s wavelength than she is Hughie’s, which Hughie finds really upsetting.

Ultimately, this does show how much Annie has changed since season 1, where Starlight came into the Seven with a real sense of optimism and hope. So much of it has now been taken from here, so when can she get it back?
