Is Cobie Smulders leaving Shrinking, and is Sofi gone for good?
Following this week’s new episode of Shrinking on Apple TV, is it okay to worry about the future of Cobie Smulders as Sofi? We technically realize that all things considered, she was really not around for all that long.
However, at the same time, none of this makes what happened in season 3 episode 9 any easier — especially when you consider how sad it was.

After all, Jimmy told Sofi near the end of the episode that he did not think he was ready to date again … but is that 100% accurate to the situation at hand? It feels more complicated. Jimmy was upset after his dad revealed he was choosing a fishing trip over Alice’s graduation, and rather than be willing to talk about it with Sofi, he clammed up. Then, he told her that Tia was okay with how he handled things, making her feel like he was comparing her to his dead wife — something that would never fly for a healthy relationship.
Consider all of this a reminder that while Jason Segel’s character may be a therapist, he is far from perfect and seems to be using his grief as avoidance for what the real problem is. He just does not seem okay to have some of the hard conversations. He is done going fully in on his father even when he should, and he also is refusing to confront his own sense of hurt. This is where we will acknowledge that Segel is 100% deserving of the Emmy this year, as he is fully doing some of the best work he ever has.
As for Cobie’s future…
We know that the actress is going to be a series regular on The Lincoln Lawyer season 5, but we are not ready to rule out future appearances here. Jimmy may come to his sense before the end of the season but given that there are only a couple of episodes left, there really is not that much time.
