As some of you out there may be aware at present, the 500th episode of NCIS is going to be airing once we get around to the end of the month. Obviously, this is going to be a story that is nostalgic and revolves around some longtime themes of the show. Yet, at the same time, could it still surprise? That is the hope.

Based on every single tease that we’ve heard so far for this story, it really is going to harken back to the early seasons while also being extremely emotional. In particular, it is one that could change Vance and a number of other team members forever — as hard as that may be to say.

To get a few more details now on what’s coming, here is some of what showrunner Steven D. Binder had to say to TV Insider:

It’s going to be a traumatic experience for everybody, and I think their attitudes are going to change as a result of that. It’s a tough case and it involves some elements from the very beginning of the series. I think a tough experience can change you, and I think that’s what’s going to happen. It’s going to touch everybody. I wanted to give everyone a moment in the sun, talk about everyone where their characters could go. Everyone’s going to be affected by this.

Binder also noted in the interview that you are going to see a number of characters come back over the course of the episode — at least in flashbacks. It remains to be seen if any fan-favorites will turn up in new footage, but the goal here is obviously to honor everything that we’ve had a chance to experience over the past 20+ years.
