Paradise season 2 episode 5: Who is Gary, really?

To say that Paradise season 2 episode 5 sent us on an emotional rollercoaster is putting it more than a little likely. How else do you explain what we ended up getting here?

Heading into this particular installment, we knew that we were meeting someone new in Gary, a man who claimed to have an extremely deep history with Sterling K. Brown’s character. What we failed to recognize was just how deep and complicated that would actually prove to be.

To the surprise of no one, the dynamic between Teri and the mailman was strictly platonic in all the time that they were around each other — however, Gary wished that it was eventually going to become more. He wanted to see things evolve for the two, especially after they worked to take care of a young boy named Bean and they fought hard to survive together amidst the larger apocalypse. That never happened, and this then brought us to the mystery of Teri’s “capture.”

Who actually took Xavier’s wife? For most of the episode, Gary had suggested that this was a group of people nearby. However, it now seems as though he did it himself! Why? Well, he recognized that this group was heading to Colorado, meaning that it would serve as a chance for Teri to leave him. He wouldn’t stand for that, and we already saw him kill his longtime partner Ennis to ensure that the news did not make it back to Teri. He may have her holed up somewhere simply to ensure that she doesn’t leave.

As for what Gary is then hoping happens to Xavier, the only answer we have is that he might just be pulling for a situation where someone takes him out through the pretense of a “rescue mission” — this taking care of his presented problem for him.
