A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2: Will Aerion, Maekar return?

We recognize that on paper, it would be easy to say that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 will be an entirely different story with a lot of new characters. After all, that is mostly how it is in the source material save for Dunk and Egg.
However, could things be a little different on the HBO series? You can argue that the closing tag with Maekar sets the stage for that. Here, it is explicitly laid out that Egg lied to Dunk about his father signing off on the two of them traveling together, and that gives his father an excuse to look for him. It also suggests that Aerion or Daeron could also be back in some form.

For now, showrunner Ira Parker is not ruling anything out. Here is what he had to say on the subject to Variety:
The one thing about this show, the nobles, the kings and queens are all terribly interesting. So many times you want to go and write for them, but the truth is that’s not what this show is. There are a lot of shows, within this world and other worlds, that definitely cover that part. And we’re not that. We are bottom-up. We are in Dunk’s POV. Even minor lords and ladies, we don’t allow ourselves to go behind the scenes in their POVs. For better or for worse, that is the storytelling lens that we have set up for this show. Whether or not somebody will come in and out of Dunk’s world again, I would say probably. Westeros is a — yeah. Yes. That’s all I’ll say. Yes.
Parker does also note to the publication that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 will remain six episodes, and will also have episodes ranging from 30-60 minutes. This may be shorter than a lot of people want, but it does feel like there is a real desire to stick to the bones of the source material — even if there are some additions and context here and there.
