A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 episode 2: More Lyonel Baratheon?

We recognize fully that entering A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 episode 2 this weekend on HBO, the story will be mostly about Dunk and Egg. Why wouldn’t it be? These two serve as the primary point-of-view characters for this story, and they were the focus of the novellas from George R.R. Martin.

Now with this being said, we certainly welcome any possible scene-stealer at this point with open arms and today, that may include Ser Lyonel Baratheon. We are talking here about someone from a historic Westeros family who also has a real tendency to cause chaos, at least through what we’ve seen. Despite their bloodline, we saw in the premiere that this is someone who still wants to let loose, and has no problem partying it up with a “Hedge Knight” who most feel is beneath him.

So is the show trying to say something about Lyonel through the party sequence? It is a fair question mark, as his social status may make it hard for him to indulge in fun things that he would otherwise want to do. He can use Dunk as a vessel for these impulses, whereas Dunk can view him as an opportunity to experience “how the other half lives” — to drink and celebrate and enjoy being in a tent for a change.

While we cannot speak to how much Lyonel will appear through the rest of the HBO series, we do think he is very much important to this world — and not just as a source of comic relief. There are five more episodes and we will see how things go.
