IT: Welcome to Derry season 1 episode 4: Why the Clown?

Through the entirety of IT: Welcome to Derry so far on HBO, we recognize that the show has been facing a number of key questions. What is a big one? It is almost existential in a way, as the producers have to explain why this story was needed. If you saw the movies, then you already know where Pennywise’s story is going. With that, the prequel has to explore what happened before and have real weight to it. We are seeing with Hanlon and Shaw an effort to try and use and/or exploit the monster. Meanwhile, there could be even greater specificity beyond that coming, including with the central figure of the clown.

In the closing seconds of episode 3, we seemingly got our first real glimpse of Pennywise in clown form. More than likely, there is a lot more coming … but why that image? What makes it important?

Speaking to Deadline recently, executive producer Jason Fuchs had the following to say about the whole clown situation, and how the show looks to examine more of its origins:

“Why is it that IT, who can take virtually any form under the sun as a shape shifter, chooses to keep coming back to this form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown? Obviously, the book has hints and suggestions…but what does it all mean? What is it that draws IT to this form? We wanted to explore why an inter-dimensional entity, who is a creature of light in its most natural state, why that being would choose to remain in Derry. There are denser, seemingly more interesting hunting grounds beyond its environs? Why does it stay there?”

We do not think that there needs to be any sort of hurry when it comes to giving us answers, but we do hope that there are some that surface here in due time.
