We had a feeling heading into the Widow’s Bay season 1 finale that we would get some sort of shock ending — but what exactly was it?

Well, we knew that over the course of the first season, the island managed to corrupt many souls due to some of the various curses, suspicions, and overall paranoia. Through a lot of this episode in particular, Tom was ready to murder who he thought was the last living descendant of Richard Warren in Ruth. Heck, he even attempted to do so!

However, it was not Tom who, in the end, was responsible for what exactly transpired here. Instead, we are looking more in the direction of Sheriff Bechir. You see, Ruth confessed to Tom that she had a secret child much earlier in her life, and that ended up being Tom’s wife and mother to Evan! This means that Evan, rather than Ruth, is the last descendant of Warren, and this is the one person Tom would never hurt. He now has to figure out how to handle this element of surprise that alters almost everything about his life.

To make matters worse, the eight bells we heard in the closing minutes suggest that the island is going to want a number of other souls before it gets satisfied. This means that a lot of other people could end up dying, but who? Is Dale going to tell everyone all the exact information he learned from the recordings? He suddenly becomes a lot more important, and hopefully that paves the way for him to become a series regular in season 2.

In general, this was an immensely satisfying end to the season! There are loose threads, but also still extremely high stakes as we move forward.
