Stranger Things 5 spoilers: EP talks final scene, long plan

As the promotional machine for Stranger Things 5 ramps up more and more, one thing feels clear — we are inching towards a somewhat-planned conclusion to the story.

We always do find it interesting how creatives decide to end their shows. There are some who try their hardest to conclude the story in a way that they long planned. However, there are others who show more of a degree of flexibility in whatever it is that they do. We personally tend to think a hybrid approach is best — it is important to stick your creative guns to an extent, but at the same time, leave it open in case the story evolves in some unexpected directions.

Speaking as a part of a piece with The Hollywood Reporter, co-creator Matt Duffer strongly suggested that the hybrid approach is very much what they have done, even if they have had a set ending for the story for a rather long time:

“We’ve known for a really long time what the final scene of the show was going to be, which gave us a North Star … But as far as a lot of the details, that was us and our writers following the story and the characters in ways that often surprised us. Really the way we approach every season — and occasionally, it’s gotten us into trouble, but I think, ultimately, it was the right way to do this — was as if every season was a movie. Let’s not leave anything on the table. Let’s not hold this back because maybe it’ll be better for later. No. We want every season to not only have its own identity, but we wanted to swing for the fences. And that’s what we tried to do, season by season.”

While we do think there’s potential for significant deaths and/or terrible things this season, we also do believe that this is a show that would benefit from its characters finding some peace. Is that really too much to ask?
