Jon Stewart, on leave from ‘The Daily Show,’ sits down with Bassem Youssef in Egypt
Even though Jon Stewart may not be a part of “The Daily Show” for the summer, his travels have apparently brought him overseas to Egypt in order to sit down with a man who has been often compared to him in the Middle Eastern market: Satirist Bassem Youssef, who has visited the Comedy Central series on a couple of occasions in the past.
When you consider how popular Stewart is in America, it is always intriguing to see how he reacts to a foreign audience. The first thing worth noting here? That like many other TV hosts in his position of being off of the air for the first time in forever, Stewart has decided to grow himself a bit of a beard.
As for everything else, Stewart attempted to speak Arabic to the crowd with mixed results. He told a few jokes about being Jewish that drew some laughs from the crowd, and explained why he is working right now to direct the movie “Rosewater,” a story that is very personal to him even when you look at the past history of the show. For those of you fascinated by international TV, the entire episode below is definitely something that you should enjoy watching.
Stewart will be back on “The Daily Show” in September, and while viewership has declined slightly without him as host, John Oliver has done a solid job of keeping the show moving, and drawing some laughs in the process. Summer is always the hardest time to draw viewership in the first place, given that there are so many other options out there… like sunshine and BBQ’s.
