‘Mistresses’ season 1, episode 2 review: Will Josslyn ever get a good storyline?

Mistresses

We weren’t sure that we were going to be fans of “Mistresses” (starring Alyssa Milano and “Lost” alum Yunjin Kim), but after watching last week’s series premiere we were surprised at how good the show is. The story isn’t anything revolutionary when it comes to television, but it does fill a void that has been seriously lacking ever since shows like “Sex and the City” and “Desperate Housewives” went off the air.

While the series premiere was fairly strong, we were concerned that there wasn’t going to be enough material to make the rest of the season exciting. The second episode bought us a few interesting stories, but some of the characters just haven’t found their way yet. Let’s take a look at this week’s episode:

Josslyn: We get it, she’s a wild woman that doesn’t want to be tied down to any one man (or woman), but her shtick has already been done by characters like Samantha Jones (Sex and the City) and Jessa Johansson (Girls), so unless her story line moves in a different direction it’s just more of her hooking up with guys and pursuing a woman who is in another relationship. Nothing worth noting happened for her this week.

Savannah: We were shocked at how quickly she jumped into bed with her co-worker after her husband had a heartbreaking reaction to being the problem in their hopes to conceive a baby. The day after, Savannah feels terrible and wants to tell Harry that she cheated on him, but he’s being so apologetic and loving that she decides to just pretend like it never happened.

Karen: Sam Grey won’t leave her alone and instead of telling him to back off she meets him for coffee. Why she is surprised that he later shows up at her office is beyond us as it is clear he has a crush and spending time with him is not going to help things. Also her freak out involving shredding all of her files on Todd may come back to bite her now that his wife’s insurance claim is being investigated.

April: This is the story we are most interested in, because it’s of a woman meeting her dead husband’s mistress (and their love child). After doing some digging April feels that the affair her husband had is legit and she confronts the woman asking her what it is that she wants from her to come into her life three years after her husband’s death. The simple answer here is money: April has it and this woman wants it for her kid. Will she hand over the cash to protect her husband’s image in her daughter’s eyes?

For a second episode we thought there were a few good stories, but Josslyn is the character that needs the most work. Give her a storyline that grabs our attention, makes us feel something for her whether it be anger, pity, sadness, we don’t care, but she needs something more then being a cookie cutter version of characters we’ve already seen so many times over.
