‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5 spoilers: Julie Plec talks ‘The Originals,’ crossovers
There aren’t too many opportunities for genuine “Vampire Diaries” scoop during the summer months, the primary reason being that the show is in hiatus, and there really isn’t that much in the way of scripts yet.
However, there is still executive producer Julie Plec, and her mind is stuffed full of information. The showrunner was present at the ATX Television Festival this weekend in Austin, and she chose to take advantage of the opportunity to speak out when it comes to some of what lies ahead for the show, and the upcoming spin-off “The Originals.”
So will there in fact be crossovers? We know that this is something that a good many fans of the show want to see, but there are still some serious issues that have to be considered. For one, Plec said (per Wetpaint) that there has to be a certain consideration given to the fact that this is an original (pun intended) series on its own, and there could be people watching this show that have never seen an episode of “The Vampire Diaries.” While she claims there are “endless possibilities” to what the show could do, that does not mean that they will actually make any major move right away. It may be a little better off two let the two series breathe for a little while at first, and the slowly add a few crossovers as the year goes on as little Easter eggs to the fans who do watch both shows. (Think, for example, what “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice” did.)
