‘White Collar’ season 5 spoiler: Hilarie Burton open for more work with Matt Bomer
At the end of “White Collar” last season, it appeared as though the fake engagement that happened between Neal and Sara was really going to set them on a path for a great future together. So what happened along the way? The best way that we can describe it is that Hilarie Burton became rather busy, and the show itself also went in a different sort of direction, casting Bridget Regan recently to play a new love interest for Matt Bomer’s character.
So does all of this mean that we are not going to be seeing much of Burton for a while? It is still pretty tough to say for sure, but the actress did tell TVLine in a recent interview that she is open to do some more work on the show pretty much whenever she is called on to do so:
“I talked to Matt [Bomer] and Willie [Garson] and Tiffani [Thiessen] over their hiatus and they really are the loveliest bunch of people. I never take that for granted.”
One positive way that you can try to look at the Regan casting is that the writers want to give Sara and Neal some distance, perhaps in a “distance makes the heart grow fonder” sort of way. However, the major disadvantage of such a situation comes with the following: What if Regan’s character becomes so well-liked that people really do want to see her with Neal? The show does not premiere on USA until the fall, so we do have plenty of time to wait.

Sara and Neal are my OTP. They each have helped the other grow as a person, and their banter is reminiscent of “Moonlighting”. I would love to see this new love interest be the wrong one for him, only to make him realize that Sara is who he should be with (even if he can’t right now). It could help his character arc, too – the show will be over once Neal settles down completely, with a girl far different from Kate. So if Hilarie comes back for a few episodes just to remind Neal of their potential (and for her to have Sara realize that maybe she needs to open up as much as Neal does), then I’d be fine. They could be endgame together while the show focuses again on the Peter/Neal bromance.

Neal is the kind of guy when he can’t be with the one he loves, he loves the one he’s with. That is part of the fun. Bridget is absolutely lovely and it will be fun to see where this goes.

Nothing would make me happier than a whole season without the obnoxious, bitchy Sara. Anybody will be better than that loser!

Neal doesn’t need a new girl every season; It’s beginning to be a “flavor-of-the-month” kind of thing. Concentrate on the real stories.

The story of WC is Neal’s search for himself…so it makes sense that he be paired with a few women before he finds “the one”. But I agree, hope this new one is his last stop. I can totally see him having a lasting relationship with this stunner who is apparently a book scholar. I’m excited to see this side story..

Despite that awesome proposal in the finale….I never saw Neal pining for Sara. For him it was “take it or leave it” kind of relationship. I always sensed that there was somebody else on the horizon for him. For me Sara arc was long over. She got a nice enough farewell…no need for her to be back after that grand farewell. I’m excited to see this new romance.

I really hope the new love interest isn’t likeable. I absolutely love Neal and Sara and it feels so unreal and forced for Neal to even consider any other girl besides Sara right now, especially after that proposal (fake or not). For Neal to be over Sara (which is a relationship that took two seasons to build) so quickly is unrealistic. In fact, I thought his playboy days were over, and I think just focusing on his relationship with Peter and his work as a consultant would be interesting enough (Shawn from Psych didn’t have a true love interest or relationship until the third season, so it’s definitely doable.)
