NBC’s ‘Community’ season 5: Dan Harmon confirms being asked back

CommunityCould Dan Harmon actually take the reigns yet again as “Community” showrunner for the show’s fifth season? At this time a month ago, it seemed impossible. (Then again, it also seemed impossible that the show would be coming back in the first place.) However, it now is looking more and more like a possibility, especially given new information that has come out of his Harmontown podcast taping.

According to Hollywookiee.com (who had a staff member onsite for taping), Harmon admitted that he had been invited back to the show to once again steer the ship. He at one point told the crew to edit out the comment, but then later said “ah, f**k it. I don’t care who knows!” He also joked that he was going to tell them that he wouldn’t return if Chevy Chase did, as well.

The show’s studio Sony Pictures TV still has not addressed any of the rumors around Harmon’s possible return to the show, and it is not particularly easy to say what will happen here. We do ultimately lean towards a Harmon return, mostly because we don’t know why else Dan would bring it up, given that he knows how much fans are attached to his work on the first three seasons on the show.

Of course, we’re still curious as to what would happen if he does come back. Would the show pick up where season 4 left off, or would the show get completely meta and pretend that the entire fourth season didn’t happen? You never really know with this guy running the ship, which is why we loved “Community” so much in the first place.

We should also be clear here that Harmon did not say if he was asked to return as the showrunner, or in a smaller capacity. He was originally asked to be a consulting producer on season 4, but he declined.
