Doctor Who anniversary specials: David Tennant surprise
We know that the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials are coming right around the corner, and there is so much to be excited about!
With that in mind, where do we start off here? Well, the best place is probably just noting that this show is going to find a few new ways to divert expectations. This is a three-part event airing on BBC One and Disney+ over the next month, and you are going to see the return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate on-screen. Meanwhile, behind the scenes Russell T. Davies makes his grand return as showrunner. There are other familiar faces who will probably turn up, but aren’t there meant to be some surprises before the show wraps up?
Speaking in a new interview with Empire, Tennant himself notes that he was shocked when he first found out about the story for these specials:
“I was surprised … when I saw what that first script was based on, then I read the second script, which is unlike any Doctor Who episode ever. These new specials are Russell off the leash.”
Obviously, that feels like a good thing. There is a bigger budget than ever before, and we also think more chances for imagination. We don’t think that Russell would have come back unless he really felt like he had an opportunity to do something different and perhaps better than ever before. With this in mind, let’s prepare ourselves for both great things here and then also when season 14 with Ncuti Gatwa begins around the holiday season. There is so much to prepare for, and of course we hope that in due time, some familiar monsters like Daleks and Cybermen are going to make some sort of appearance.
