‘Glee’ season 5 spoilers: Does Mike O’Malley’s new show mean less Burt?
While “Glee” has done so many things wonderfully over the course of the past several years, the one thing that has always been a little crazy is that two of the best actors, in Dot-Marie Jones (Coach Beiste) and Mike O’Malley (Burt Hummel) have never been given all that much to do save for a few storylines here and there. For the past several years, O’Malley’s availability on “Glee” has been in question during pilot season, but the shows that he was trying to be a part of never made it to the next level.
However, that has changed now with “Welcome to the Family.” NBC picked up the show last week, and it is is set to air on Thursday nights as a way to beef up a lineup that includes “Parks and Recreation.” The show has promise thanks mostly to O’Malley’s talent, but we also worry about it no having much of a lead-in thanks to “The Big Bang Theory” traditionally clobbering anything that airs on rival networks at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time.
So is the end for Burt very much near? Don’t worry too much about it yet. Just like O’Malley’s character has set insecure people at ease for years, the Emmy-nominated actor promised to E! News that he would still find a way to turn in an appearance or two despite a production schedule that keeps him busy elsewhere:
“I’ve already spoken to Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk and Burt is a very, very big part of my life, playing that character I love doing it…I think we shoot some in July, so I’m definitely coming back next season!”
One nice thing about O’Malley’s two jobs is that they both will film in Los Angeles, meaning that he will not have to worry about having to make some sort of epic journey to make an appearance happen. Also, don’t worry about Burt being killed off: Murphy’s already said that he won’t do it to longtime fans of the character.
There are still some other major changes coming to “Glee” that do not involve O’Malley, and you can read a little bit more about them over at the link here.
