‘Downton Abbey’ season 4 spoilers: Laura Carmichael talks more on Edith romance

It is not often at all that we have opportunities to hear from a star of “Downton Abbey” during a season, so when we are getting something like Laura Carmichael speaking out multiple times within the span of a few days, you have to feel rather celebratory about it.

Yesterday, we shared a few generic thoughts about where the story could go for one of the series’ most-popular characters in Lady Edith. This time around, we are turning to a new interview between the actress and the Daily Telegraph, one in which Carmichael has the opportunity to go much more in-depth about the story ahead in season 4, in particular Edith’s relationship with newspaper editor Michael Gregson:

“Her editor, obviously there is a spark and that continues really. It’s great because I completely understand how much Edith has come on, and it really has come out of unfortunate things happening to her, and not getting the life she planned. I’ve always thought she would have been a dutiful wife, and it sparked her to find something else to do, and she does. As ever Julian manages to take the characters we know and love into exciting places at exciting times that we also know about, so we know that in the twenties women were beginning to do these things and we believe we’re following it accurately.

“She’s still going despite the knocks she’s had. It’s those terrible things that happened, those unlucky things, that have led to her growing and becoming a much stronger person. Even looking at series three so much has changed in terms of her aspirations and how she conducts herself as a modern woman, and that has come out of being jilted.”

So will this relationship turn up sunshine and roses? We have a hard time believing that. For one, Gregson’s marital status is surely going to lead to a continuous stream of questions as to whether or not he is the right man for her. In addition, there is the understandable question of age after her last attempt to be with an older man in Sir Anthony ended so horribly.
