‘Britain’s Got Talent’ preview: Martin and Marielle are completely insane
We have to be honest: We love ballroom dancers, but we’ve never been huge fans of them on these “Got Talent” shows, whether it be in America or in Britain. They are always impressive and make it through to the next round, but you know that the have about a 0.001% shot of actually winning. Why? Think of it as a “Shark Tank” pitch: Someone may buy a really good brand of ice cream as a consumer, but would they invest money in it if there was nothing proprietary about it? In order to be a great ballroom dancer that people will line up specifically to see, you have to blow the roof off of the place.
The truth is, we’re not sure that Martin and Marielle are really dancers so much as they are acrobats. Their routine on Saturday’s “Britain’s Got Talent” feels like a perfect marriage of the two. Basically, Martin spends about a minute throwing Marielle around over his head like a rag doll, and she seems completely unfazed by the whole ordeal. It’s one of the strangest / most terrifying things that we’ve ever seen.
Of course, the clip does not give away whether or not the two advance, but it’s pretty much a given that they will. Simon Cowell and company are constantly looking for acts that actually bring something new to the world that we have not seen before, and these two have done that and then some.
What do you think about this performance, and do you think this ventures far enough from traditional ballroom dance (and even traditional acrobats) that they have a genuine shot?
