Ratings: NBC’s ‘Community’ hits another series low, the Greendale bell tolls

We’re a little bit late with this “Community” ratings piece (apologies on that), but this really is a case for waiting for some bad news. The final numbers have already come in for Thursday night’s new episode, and overall it’s not good. Just how sad of a situation are we talking about here? Basically, the lack of an upward adjustment means that the show is sitting at a series-low 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic.

If you really wanted to make an excuse for this, you could do so by saying that there was a new “Big Bang Theory” on, or that the show had a week off last week thanks to a rerun. Both are in some ways the sort of thing that NBC has been saying about this timeslot for the past few years, since it doesn’t really seem like anything can actually withstand the comedy titan over at CBS, and NBC is insistent on keeping their Thursday-night comedy block intact.

Unfortunately, no excuse can hide the fact that a 1.0 probable goes below what the network is really looking to keep. “Parks and Recreation” is for sure staying around for more next year, and there are reasonable chances for both “Whitney” as well as “Go On.” We wonder at times whether or not there are regrets now about passing on that Rainn Wilson “Office” spin-off “The Farm,” mostly because things are clearly not going particularly well with anything else. (If there is one thing that could be “Community’s” saving grace, it is that so much around it is also faring awful.)

Of course, the irony about these numbers right now is that Thursday’s episode was actually the strongest episode of the season from this standpoint, as it brought us the show that we love, along with the willingness to also take a few risks along the way.
