FX’s ‘The Americans’ episode 8 review: Are Philip and Elizabeth headed towards divorce?
On this week’s episode of “The Americans”, Philip’s indiscretion with is ex, Irina, has managed to stay buried and his relationship with Elizabeth is growing stronger once again, much to the dismay of the KGB, who clearly want Elizabeth and Philip not to trust each other so that they will only trust the KGB.
Claudia meets with Elizabeth and tells her that Philip lied to her about his night with Irina and that they did actually sleep together. Elizabeth tells her that she trusts what Philip told her about his time with Irina and Claudia reminds her that their marriage is a working relationship and shouldn’t be treated as anything more then that.
Even though Elizabeth says that she trusts what Philip told her about Irina, inside she is doubting him. She waits a few days and then confronts Philip about sleeping with Irina. He admits that it’s true and apologizes, saying that he lied because he didn’t want to lose her. He tells her he loves her and asks if they can start over, but Elizabeth says no telling him that their marriage is only about the job now and nothing else.
Philip is crushed and goes to see Martha, but while he is with her, she is wearing the necklace he took from Elizabeth to give to her and his mind wanders back to his wife. Later he tries again to fix his marriage with Elizabeth, but she is adamant that there is no relationship between them anymore. He tells her that they are living in modern times now and that if she doesn’t want to be married to him anymore then they should go their separate ways, that the KGB wouldn’t care at this point. What will she do?
Stan gets his wish (sort of) about keeping Nina safe as his boss gives him the keys to an apartment (a safe house) that he and Nina will start to have their meetings in. When he meets Nina there, he tries to apologize for the other night when they slept together, but she takes the responsibility saying that she initiated it with the kiss and then she kisses him again. He starts to suspect that she might be having a romantic relationship with him because she wants him to care for her, so that he will give her the safety he promised her, but she reassures him that isn’t the case.
Will Elizabeth and Philip get divorced? Do you think that Nina is playing Stan to get safety or do you think she genuinely cares for him? Leave us a comment and tell us what you thought of this week’s episode of “The Americans”.
