NBC’s ‘Smash’ season 2: Proper series finale coming despite Saturday move
If you are a “Smash” fan, it is certainly understandable that you are spending part of the day today wiping a few tears off of your brow. After all, this once-popular series has been sent to the great TV graveyard known as Saturday nights, where the episodes will burn off for the rest of the season. This is a move that is rather similar to what NBC did with “The Firm,” with the only exception being that this series never really had spectacular ratings. It’s shocking really just how quickly the musical here fell from grace. Can we blame the lack of a lead-in after coming on after “The Voice”? Sure, but one of the other issues simply is that the first season was not particularly great, and even a solid season 2 cannot make up for that.
So what does the man responsible for running the ship here have to say about the change? Speaking in a new interview with TVLine, Josh Safran explains that he is both stunned and sad at the same time:
“I didn’t see it coming, being relegated to Saturday. We’re all aware the show is not successful, but I guess I had hoped we would see what happened when The Voice came back [or] maybe they’d move us to a better time slot. But I understand from the network’s point of view. We hit a number and we stuck there.”
For those worried that the move (which surely is a sign of cancellation) will cause the show to have an improper ending, Safran explains that there is no reason to fret:
“I don’t want [viewers] to think they are going to be left hanging, because they won’t be … The season has a beginning, middle and an end… [And] it just gets better and better. Everyone here from the top down is incredibly proud of the work. I know that there are people who have their opinions and that’s totally acceptable, but that doesn’t change our viewpoint that we’re really proud and we love the show.”
