NBC banishes ‘Smash’ season 2 to Saturdays; ‘Go On’ placed after ‘The Office’
One year after premiering to strong ratings and being NBC’s personal pet, “Smash” is now moving to the doghouse that is Saturday nights.
Beginning on April 6, the series (per TVbythenumbers) will shift over to a new timeslot at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on April 6, and it will be allowed to finish off its entire run there. The good news obviously is that NBC is not canceling the show midway through the season despite terrible ratings, though this means that you’re out of luck unless you have a recording device or want to spend your Saturday nights indoors. We really felt that “Smash” was significantly better this season, but it never could overcome a pretty woeful season 1 that scared viewers away like that awful guy on Halloween who is just out to give children nightmares.
This was not the only change announced by NBC today, either:
-“Go On” will move to Thursdays on April 4 and 11, where it will follow up “The Office.” This could be seen as a bad move and it may be, but at least Matthew Perry is getting a better lead-in than he’s had most of the spring.
-“The New Normal” will air a one-hour season (and likely series) finale on April 2. We wonder whether or not NBC deeply regrets not just waiting until “The Voice” came back to air more episodes, since this January-March run killed both this show and “Go On.”
-Beginning on April 9, “Ready For Love” will air on Tuesdays following “The Voice.” Since every dating show not named “The Bachelor” has flopped, it’s fair to say that we’re not expecting much here.
What’s your reaction to these changes, and are you extremely bummed that “Smash” more or less has its fate sealed despite a pretty good season? If you want to see who else is coming on board this season, you can do so over at the link here.
