NBC’s ‘Smash’ season 2 spoilers: Rosie O’Donnell to play herself

While “Smash” is not getting anywhere near smashing ratings for its second season on the air, NBC does seem to be showing some kindness in allowing the rest of this sure-to-be-canceled series to play out. Not only that, but there are still some big names coming on board the show.

In a new post on Twitter, actress and recent OWN talk-show host Rosie O’Donnell confirmed that she will be joining the show for an episode, and is taking on a role that she should know very well at this point considering how many headlines she has made over the course of her career:

“Love that show so much … I am playing me – luckily I have done a lot of research… It’s the TONY AWARDS episode.”

The idea of “Smash” going to the Tonys is an exciting idea in itself, and it’s a pleasure to see that the writers and producers are doing whatever that they can to give these scenes as grand of a feel as possible. The trick here is going to be seeing how they work something this huge out within a budget that must be shrinking by the day. Luckily, NBC has spared little expense so far in making this show feel cinematic, and hopefully they will continue to do so in the weeks ahead. “Smash” still has the majority of episodes to go in the season, with the finale likely getting set to air at some point in April or May. (Stay tuned for more on that, as NBC has a rather complicated summer schedule to sort out before announcing their spring finale dates.)
