‘How I Met Your Mother’ season 8, episode 17 preview: What does the Captain want?

As you probably know now courtesy of reading some of our other “How I Met Your Mother” preview articles over the past week, Kyle MacLachlan is slated to reprise his role on Monday night’s episode as The Captain … otherwise known as the husband of Zoey, the woman that Ted ended up snatching right from under him during the sixth season of the show.

So why in the world would this character re-enter the picture now? This is something that we have wondered ever since the first announcement was made, especially since we did not think that Mr. Mosby would be a person that The Captain would want to actually spend any sort of time with at all. Nonetheless, Ted receives a call from the guy in the sneak peek below, and he quickly has to figure out what in the world he wants to do about it.

At the end of the day, it is actually Marshall who makes the decision for him … mostly because he just wants to see if there is a possible invitation coming up to go on board the guy’s boat. That doesn’t happen, but what does is equally surprising: The Captain is interested in acquiring Robin’s contact information.

What is he looking for with it? Our guess is a date, and in that case we have a feeling that he will be disappointed thanks to Robin being engaged. Then again, wouldn’t it be hilarious if Ted finds a way to put her up to going on a fake date with the guy, mostly to make up for the fact that he played a part in destroying the man’s marriage? We don’t put anything past him.
