Super Bowl commercials: Wheat Thins, Best Buy, M&Ms among top five ads

Super Bowl XLVIINow that we’ve had a chance to check out all of the Super Bowl commercials for 2013 (which you can check out individually at the link here), it’s judgment day, specifically when it comes to ranking what we feel were the five best ads of the night.

We’re not necessarily judging this solely on whether or not the ad was funny, but how it represented the brand, the use of the Super Bowl timeslot, and whether or not this is something that elicited a strong reaction and would make people want to watch it over and over again.

With that, let’s get to the ads!

5. M&Ms, “Love Ballad” – A funny ad that almost reminded us of “50 Shades of Grey” with a popular chocolate-filled character. Basically, it continued along the company’s recent trend of being edgy, but still family-friendly while reminding us of just how delicious the product is. Bonus points for casting “Glee’s” Naya Rivera and appealing to the young crowd.

4. Dodge Ram, “Farmer” – This is probably a polarizing ad, but we want to applaud the risk here by Dodge to air a two-minute commercial that contained only images and narration. It was a little longer than it really needed to be, but still it was something on the Super Bowl that actually stirred you to your core.

3. Best Buy, “Asking Amy” – If you are interested in appealing to a new demographic, this is how you do it: by bringing in an extremely funny actress at the top of her game and having her mess around with a Best Buy employee. This is far and away an improvement on the Justin Bieber – Ozzy Osbourne ad from last year, so it gave you a larger scope of the company’s products while also more humor without a gimmick.

2. Budweiser, “Brotherhood” – It’s interesting that so many other branches of the company here choose to use humor and girls in skimpy clothing to sell their products, but then Budweiser every year comes out with the famous Clydesdale horses and moves us in a surprising and nostalgic way. The use of “Landslide,” one of the greatest songs of all time by our estimation, is an added touch.

1. Wheat Thins, “Night Vision” – This may not be the most-popular ad online right now when it comes to hits, but you have to love the lengths that this guy will go to protect his Spicy Buffalo Wheat Thins. It was a fantastic way to introduce a new product, and it combined just about everything that you would want to see in a Super Bowl commercial, from random humor to a little bit of cheesy visual effects. Apparently, these things are so tasty that even seeing a yeti is less important.
