Super Bowl commercials 2013: David Letterman, Andrew Luck play catch
The last time that we saw “The Late Show with David Letterman” featured prominently in a memorable Super Bowl commercial, it revolved around both Jay Leno and Oprah Winfrey playing a role in creating both a pretty awkward and hilarious moment. This time around, Letterman opted to go more for a football-themed route for a commercial that paid homage to the host’s Indianapolis roots.
The premise of the spot is pretty simple: Letterman is shown encouraging a kid that he has the potential to do some pretty great things with the football; but then, it is revealed that he is actually talking to Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, who happens to also be tagging along for the throwing session with the late-night host. It’s a clever little commercial, and one that at least should generate some social-media buzz, which is a good thing considering that Letterman does not even have a Twitter account to begin with.
Letterman should enjoy a nice bump in ratings on Monday thanks to the big game, which is the same sort of thing that many shows on the network tend to hope for. Following the Super Bowl, CBS has already made the move to have a special edition of “The Late Late Show” with Craig Ferguson air after both “Elementary” and the local news. As to whether or not it will fare well, that is to be seen given that CBS has failed to really give it too much when it comes to promotion.
What did you think about this promo, and does it make you more or less likely to watch “The Late Show with David Letterman” moving forward? Be sure to share your thoughts below, and you can check out some other Super Bowl commercials over at the link here.

I’m still laughing. The fact that I’ve been a Colts fan since age 8 is value added. It is so Dave. The only other spot I thought was as good or better was the Best Buy spot. Goes to show what an intelligent talented mind can say in 15 seconds vs. the alternative. The names may be different in this one but the technique is the same. It works. Way to go Dave! Long live the big blue horseshoe.

Does anyone know if the kid is actually Letterman’s son? Harry is 9 which could be how old that boy is.

It may not have been his best; however, it sure was MUCH better than many of those commercials we had to suffer through during the 2013 Superbowl. Thanks to Dave, Andrew and the young man.

Meh. Nowhere near as funny as the one he did with Leno. Pretty sure you couldn’t top it.
