‘Homeland’ season 3: Who’s the first producer to land network pilot?

Prior to “Homeland” season 3 starting up meetings in the writers’ room, there were all sorts of questions when it came to just how much time some of the writers and producers attached to the show were going to have. Why? When you have a show as successful as this one, it is inevitable that some of your talent is going to look to create and produce some new programming of their own, and many EPs thus took on the challenge of developing new pilots for some major networks.

In a surprising turn of events, however, all of the pilots featuring executive producer Howard Gordon from the show ended up failing to receive a pilot order. The same cannot be said now, however, for Michael Cuesta. According to new reports, the executive producer (who has been with “Homeland” for all 24 episodes) has seen his new pilot at CBS entitled “Second Sight” be picked up. This show, which is also produced by “CSI” executive producer Carol Mendelsohn, is a British adaptation of a show about a man who learns to rely on looking within in order to solve crimes. Basically, it’s like “The Mentalist” meets “Minority Report” with a little bit “The Sixth Sense” mixed in for good measure.

Honestly, we are a bit surprised that the pilot was picked up considering that shows focusing on the subconscious or alternate universes lately have all bombed (see “Do No Harm,” “My Own Worst Enemy,” or “Awake” for evidence of this). However, Cuesta, who has also worked on “Dexter,” clearly has a great idea as to what makes a great series.

If “Second Sight” (which is the tentative title in America) does receive a series order, it could end up premiering at around the same time as “Homeland” season 3 in late September.
