Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight on HBO, September 19?
So where do we begin here? Let’s start by getting some of the bad news: Alas, the show is off the air tonight due to the Emmys. It makes some sense, given that Oliver and his staff are currently at the Emmys. All of this is a shame, given that we initially hoped and thought there’d be an episode tonight, but that is not the case and we have to wait for one more week. At least Oliver and the staff won some trophies tonight! We suppose that this helps with the absence of it, at least to some extent…
As for what the real focus is going to be when the show comes back, that question is still out in the ether. We don’t think that there’s one overarching headline from the past week that the show needs to focus on. So with that in mind, don’t be shocked if the writers take on another big subject that you’d be totally surprised by — it’s hard to know precisely what that would be, but it’s something that could prove to be a surprise. It’s almost better if it is! (Of course, a lot of what could be featured will depend on what happens in the next seven days.)
There are still a handful of episodes to go this season, so let’s hope through the remainder of them there are opportunities for some special stuff — think pre-taped bits with memorable cameo appearances and a whole lot more. Typically, Oliver’s series runs through November.
