‘Dexter’ season 8 debate: Is Hannah or Lumen the better choice?

Yvonne Strahovski - "Dexter"Ever since the end of “Dexter” season 6, we have admittedly been firmly in the camp that we should see more of Julia Stiles as Lumen Pierce before the show comes to a close. However, at the same time there have been plenty of Lumen haters out there, and the argument for many of them against the character returning is rather simple: what else is there for her to do, since it is pretty clear that her philosophy on being with Dexter moving forward is not going to change?

Even if there is no firm answer to this question, the real argument from our standpoint concerning Lumen is simple: she was an enormous part of Dexter’s past (even for just a short amount of time), so for her to be mentioned in just two of the past 24 episodes seems to be a little bit strange.

Then, Hannah McKay (Yvonne Strahovski) comes around, and she is suddenly known now as Dexter’s new soulmate … and the revisionist history that has gone on since then is rather surprising, as we have constantly heard quotes that there has been no one else out there who truly understood Dexter. We think that Lumen understood him, but just did not know how to deal with the fact that Dexter’s demon is something that would never go away.

So who is Dexter better suited for, and who is he the most likely to end up with on season 8 of the show? That’s what we are looking to debate now.

The case for Hannah – For one, she is a present part of the story; and although she seemingly left an orchid on Dexter’s doorstep as a way of saying goodbye, the executive producers have already said that they want Strahovski back for the new season. The issue here, however, is an obvious one: while she identifies and understands Dexter, she also tried to kill Deb. There are not very many things that Dex holds close, but this is one of them … and it probably makes them being together impossible.

The case for Lumen – For one, we thought this character had better chemistry with Dexter, and she was the best part of a season that had an underdeveloped villain and some other strange storylines (see Batista and LaGuerta being married). But really, the only way that she can return is if Dexter is willing to change; and while he has shown some flexibility as of late, it is hardly enough to just suddenly stop killing and be back with someone who is not even in Florida at the moment.

Who do you think that Dexter is better suited for at the end of the day … if anyone? If you want to vote on how you think the show should end, you can do so over at the link here.
