‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 6: A look ahead, and reflection on season 5 (video)

Just as we near the end of 2012, this is also due time for a moment of reflection from “Sons of Anarchy” executive producer Kurt Sutter on the past 13 episodes of his hit FX show, in addition to just where he wants to see the story go from here. With that in mind, we turn to the latest edition of “Before the Anarchy,” which really serves as a bookend for everything that comes before it, and like the series itself, leaves enough of a cliffhanger to keep you coming back for more.

Before even mentioned season 6 of the show, Sutter starts things off by discussing what kind of season this has been for him when it comes to plotting out the story as well as the arcs for many of the characters:

“I think this has been the season of unplanned changes. I think nobody saw the changes that were going to happen, really beginning with the [death of] Opie. That’s really what cracked the wall for Jax.”

Sutter is joined here by wife and show star Katey Sagal, and what is nice about this chapter is that it features both Sutter and Paris Barclay explaining a little bit more about the executive producer’s writing process. Sutter explains some of that when talking about the unexpected changes that happened midway through the writing process of season 5:

“I have to start thinking about the following season midway through the [current] season … I come in with a general blueprint of where I want to go, and I have a very loose grip on that. I’ve learned that the looser that grip is, the more open I am to let the story and the characters dictate where the show goes … That’s one of the reasons why this has been a really strong season, because there were a lot of things laid out that I didn’t see coming.”

As for season 6, Sutter explains that he has a general idea both of where it will start off and where he sees it going, but of course there are a number of details still needed in order to fill it out. More will likely be figured out when he returns to the writers’ room in February, and starts to really uncover what the future for Jax and the rest of SAMCRO will be.
