Queen of the South series finale: Is Teresa Mendoza really dead?
Without further ado, let’s go ahead and ask ourselves the central question now: Is she really dead? Is Alice Braga’s character more or less gone before the final curtain? We know that the character at least appears in the episode, as there are photos of her body on a morgue table. Obviously, that is less than ideal.
The central theory entering the finale was that Teresa and James somehow planned this whole ordeal in advance, and we are on the road to a situation where eventually, she will be able to find her freedom. It’s a risky move and maybe James had to be the one to fire in order to make it all believable. In our heart of hearts, we still have a hard time thinking that she is gone; it just doesn’t feel like the proper culmination to the relationship between these two characters.
For the first part of the episode, the writers did their best in order to make us think that Teresa was still dead — which of course made us continue to be in denial. They still did a lot to convince us, whether it be the morgue table or the fire. At the 45-minute mark, she was still dead and we were starting to have some serious concerns.
Was Pote able to get revenge on Boaz for what happened? Absolutely, and that did give us at least a little bit of solace. Seeing Teresa leave Dumas the waterfront was also a nice touch.
Now, the twist
Teresa WAS alive! She did make it through! Everything was a perfectly concocted setup. This was beautiful and really, who were we to ever doubt her in the first place? This was clever, well thought-out, and a perfect way to end the series. Now, we can all breathe easy — everything ended just as it should. Now, we wish we could go back in time and ease all of our paranoia…
