‘Dexter’ season 7, ‘Homeland’ season 2 finales set Showtime record

There is even more good news coming down at the moment for Showtime, at least when it comes to their season finales of both “Dexter” as well as “Homeland”: both shows have managed to be huge hits in the ratings in addition to getting some of the acclaim that they already have from fans. As a matter of fact, the two set new series highs and have brought in more viewers in a two-hour span than any other time of original programming in the network’s history.

Let’s start off with “Dexter,” which carried thins off to a strong start with a finale watched by 2.8 million people, and in total 3.4 million on the night. We’re once again sure that the higher ratings are going to lead to there being a greater mass of people demanding that the network opt to commission a season 9 for the drama, but we still think that this possibility is remote. Michael C. Hall and the other leads are only under contract for one more year, which means that the network would have to renegotiate and pay out more money to bring them back moving forward. Ultimately, we think that it is a better move, especially when the network already has a hit in “Homeland,” to end the show when the creative is over.

Speaking of “Homeland,” the conclusion to this love story on Sunday also drew a series high in 2.3 million viewers. While not everyone loves the shift into what is becoming a little bit more of a love story, it does prove yet again that more and more people are flocking to high-quality programming rather than just shows that appeal to the lowest common denominator.
