You can now watch ‘Game of Thrones’ season 3 with an official beer
Who wants to get a step closer to Westeros while watching “Game of Thrones”? We have heard of some pretty bizarre tie-ins to shows in the past, and we can’t decide if this one is either awesome (at least for people over the age of 21) or really just downright strange.
In a new press release Monday, Brewery Ommegang announced that they are teaming with HBO to create an official line of beer products to tie directly into the series based off of the George R.R. Martin novels, and these are going to be crafted specifically for the purpose of working alongside the show. The first beer, which is going to be known as the Iron Throne Blonde Ale, will be released at some point in March; that way, they will be available before the start of season 3.
This is only set to be the first ale released for the show, as there will be an additional one crafted in the fall and two more set to launch in future seasons of the series. From a marketing standpoint, this is smart; the majority of “Game of Thrones” fans are certainly old enough to drink beer, and HBO has done something similar over the years in marketing a real-life version of Tru Blood from that hit show. While there is not necessarily a “Mad Men”-sponsored drink, the AMC series has inspired plenty of cookbook and cocktail lines of its own. (Let’s just hope that “Breaking Bad” hasn’t inspired anything at all…)
What do you think: does a “Game of Thrones” beer sound like a good strategy to you, or would rather see them market such other things as dragon eggs, Tyrion wigs, or crazy little smoke babies like the one that killed Renly?
