‘Saturday Night Live’ preview: Expectations for Martin Short, Paul McCartney

Saturday Night Live LogoWhen you are a comedy icon like Martin Short, people expect you to be funny. Therefore, it is certainly fair to say that he may be held to a higher standard on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend than a host like Jeremy Renner was earlier this season. Going back to his days on “SCTV,” Short proved himself time and time again to be a great character actor and writer, and now he will have an opportunity to showcase some of his talents here again.

While Short can certainly sing, don’t expect this to be the same sort of musical show that you have seen from many other hosts already this season. He is likely to spend more of his time playing bizarre characters in sketches and going over-the-top for a laugh. Meanwhile, he will likely leave most of the performing to an expert in Sir Paul McCartney. When you have someone on your show who is arguably more famous than fame itself, you tend to allow them as much time as possible to do their thing. With that in mind, expect more than two performances from the former Beatle tonight.

We certainly expect this week to be a funny show, and possible even in the top five of the season given who the host is. It also helps that the final “Saturday Night Live” episode of the year is always one that is traditionally pretty funny, mostly because the writers know that they can’t really save much of their material for the following week given that it will not really be relevant then.
