‘The Mindy Project’ spoilers: Beth Grant returns … as a series regular?
What in the world is going on with “The Mindy Project” these days? Whenever you have a freshman series that is struggling in some way, it is not that great of a surprise to see there be some changes happening with it behind the scenes. Even with that being said, though, it is still rather stunning to see there being so many moves made here in a short amount of time.
The newest one? Seeing Beth Grant, whose character was previously fired from her job as nurse after all sorts of egregious violations, return to the show in a new position of series regular. This move follows up Anna Camp being reduced to a recurring role, which means that there is going to be more room for Beverly to shine.
With this being said, Mindy Kaling better hope that all of the changes being made to this show are going to legitimately improve things quickly; otherwise, you are likely to leave viewers feeling a mix of confusion and frustration over a show that could be evolving too quickly for its own good. Comedies are all about familiarity, and it is clear here that some of these moves are being made to make the show as funny as it can be. However, it could almost be so unfamiliar when the dust settles it’s like airing a pilot all over again.
Then again, Kaling may have felt the need for a change given the show’s steady ratings drop. It is still ahead of “Ben and Kate” in 18-49 numbers, but it’s fair to say that many were expecting a little bit more before the season from a show with such a strong leading lady, and Fox is going to have to be feeling generous to order a season 2.
