‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 9: Ellen Pompeo reveals how [spoiler] will come out

On this past Thursday night’s new “Grey’s Anatomy” season 9 episode, the closing minutes provided a jaw-dropping moment for longtime fans of the show: after years of her and Derek struggling to get pregnant, Meredith Grey is finally expecting. Not only that, but she is despite the fact that she has already adopted a child in Zola, and that she was not even really putting any sort of concentrated effort into it.

So what is going to be coming up next? While Ellen Pompeo cannot of course give away every secret at the moment, the actress does tell TVLine that her character will end up telling most of her friends about her surprise in a way that feels completely natural: when she is unable to order a drink when they are all out to dinner. In addition to that, she also explains that there is a reason why Derek was the first to know here rather than her longtime best friend Cristina:

“There’s a lot going on between Cristina and Meredith. They’re both preoccupied. Cristina’s going through her thing with Owen. Meredith is dealing with this, as well as Derek’s hand. It kind of makes it easier for them to keep things from each other.”

Even though this may be unusual for the show, it really does feel natural for Meredith and Derek to actually be the #1 people in each others’ lives when it comes to secrets and life-changing moments. Pompeo specifically cites this for her character as an example of her maturity, as well as a byproduct of what happened when Cristina went away to Minnesota for a time.
