Ratings: Is the end here for ‘Ben and Kate,’ ‘Happy Endings,’ and ‘Apartment 23’?
Now is not a good time to be a comedy on Tuesday night. We were worried almost from the get-go that ABC’s decision to follow up “Dancing with the Stars” with “Happy Endings” and “Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23” was a risky one, mostly in that these shows were without much of a lead-in with young people compared to where they were with “Modern Family,” and in addition to that, they were also airing against comedy blocks on both Fox and NBC.
Well, the new results are in after a week-long election hiatus, and they are not good. Overall, “Happy Endings” at least managed to muster a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic, but this is still far from enough to merit lasting on the air beyond this season (see what happened to “Cougar Town” for evidence). In addition to that, “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23” finished with just a meager 1.1, tying it with “Ben and Kate” and a plummeting “Private Practice” for the worst performance on the night.
Were there any winners here still? Sure! Despite its Halloween episode failing to see the light of day, “The New Normal” ended up posting a respectable 1.8 rating for its new episode Tuesday, while “Hart of Dixie” tied its season high with a 0.7. This may not seem like much, but this is the best-performing show on The CW for the first two nights of the week, and if this trend continues a third season is pretty much inevitably for Rachel Bilson and the rest of the cast.
