Saturday Night Live casts Jimmy Fallon as Justin Trudeau, James Corden as Boris Johnson

Saturday Night Live

Tonight on Saturday Night Livewe had one surprise after another for the cold open. Who else expected SO many cameos? It was one thing to bring in Jimmy Fallon as Justin Trudeau, and then another to cast Paul Rudd as Macron. Then, to go ahead and also get James Corden to play Boris Johnson.

This is a rarity — when else does the host of a rival late-night talk show end up appearing on a late night-institution on NBC? It’s not something that transpires often. Yet, Corden did such a great job as Johnson that he almost stole the show at times — he also brought some serious Chris Farley vibes to the performances as well. (Yet, remember this — there can only be ONE Chris Farley at the end of the day.)

The idea of the sketch itself was a little bit odd, mostly because of the fact that you featured the three world leaders all making fun of Baldwin’s Trump — a spoof of what happened a little bit earlier this week. There was still some comedy to it, but also at the same time, it felt mostly based around the cameos. The show didn’t have any real way to end it, so Cecily Strong came out in the closing minutes in order to turn this into a Melania Trump message about bullying and #BeBest.

This sketch was everything that was good and bad about the show at the same time — there were some funny lines sure, but it seems so cameo-based that you don’t get to see the talents of the original cast. Don’t these people deserve some more opportunities for success and standout performances?

There is another fun fact in here — Rudd previously played another high-level political figure on the show in Pete Buttigieg.
